Introduction

As an associate professor with a research/extension appointment, my mission is to develop and communicate research-based information to the floriculture industry in Michigan and beyond.  My areas of interest include greenhouse energy conservation, production efficiency, managing the growing environment, and use of plant growth regulators to improve floriculture crop quality.

Communication with industry is key.  Although individual phone calls and E-mails are sometimes needed to discuss specific production issues, much of the information that my research team generates is shared at state and national grower meetings and via electronic newsletters and magazines with a broad domestic circulation.  I also manage the MSU Floriculture Production website, which contains most of our recent trade magazine articles and additional production information.

I've been writing for several years for GPN magazine on topics that are related to some of the more technical aspects of floriculture crop production.  The column, entitled Technically Speaking, focuses on managing temperature and light, greenhouse energy, and growth regulators in an economical, sustainable manner.  I'm excited to share more thoughts and research-based information in this blog.  Thanks for reading.

  1. I think we can all agree that we live in an amazing age. Imagine what your grandma would say if you told her you flew in an airplane over the Atlantic Ocean, all the way to Europe, and called her from the airplane! And there's so much other, newer technology, too (i.e. cell phones, the internet, laptop computers, the iPAD, lasers). So I'm glad to see that some of this great technology is being applied to growing beautiful flowers. Flowers are for so much more than just Valentine's Day and weddings! You can give flowers to almost anyone for anything you want (sometimes a plant is a more practical choice). If you really want to make them happy, give them some really nice flowers AND some candy. That will really make their day!!!
